Are Oats Gluten-Free?
by Dr Julie Bhosale
This is a debate which has raged for a long time, I have seen research dating back to the 1950s on this!
Due to the increased awareness on gluten, gluten intolerances and immune-mediated diseases affected by gluten (celiac disease) this debate has come firmly into the public realm.
One google search for this question and you will find a divide of opinions, not all of them backed by evidence either....

Very Berry Eton Mess - with Nairns Oat Biscuits
by Julie Bhosale

Looking for a super easy, healthy dessert that does not require any preparation?
My take on an Eton Mess using my favourite Nairns Oat Biscuits will tick all those boxes!
Your traditional Eton Mess uses meringue....aside from the fact it does not have a lot of good stuff in it, I am just not a huge fan of meringue at all (sorry for those that are!). In this recipe I replace meringue with the Mixed...

On Life With Two
by Julie Bhosale

It is Mothers Day and this time of year always makes me a little more reflective than usual. When I was first pregnant and had a little being kicking away in my belly I could not really imagine what life would be like when they arrived. When we had said baby…I could not imagine life with two. Around Mothers Day, in 2013 I wrote a blog called ‘Being Mum – 18 Months In’.
It feels like a life-time has...

Cajun Beef Casserole
by Julie Bhosale

A very hearty, wholesome meal which all family members can enjoy! This recipe is very high in iron with the inclusion of beef, chickpeas, some green leafy vegetables. I discuss more about the importance of iron for all family members over on my
next blog. A casserole is a true classic and this version has a real taste kick with the Cajun spices, red onion and capsicum, without it being super hot...

Haem Vs Non-Haem Iron Foods
by Julie Bhosale

The first week of May is World Iron Awareness Week. Here in New Zealand this is something that health professionals actively team up together to support and there are some good reasons why.....
Concerning Iron Stats:
- 1/3 of the worlds population are anemic, which is actually a late consequence of iron deficiency.
- Iron deficiency in infants is the biggest nutrient deficiency world-wide in both...

My Baby is Getting His Wings
by Julie Bhosale

In six months my first son, Arjun, will turn five.
Five!
We have just planed his birthday party. I am being very organised because after five years of parties I have learnt that you need to be.
However, while I may be ready for his party I am definitely not ready for him to be five.
It feels like yesterday I had a curly haired toddler in a nappy with that sticky outing tummy and cheeky grin. And then...

Fabulous Feijoas
by Julie Bhosale
What are Feijoas?Feijoa's are a small oval-shaped fruit sometimes called a pineapple guava. Actually they taste a bit like a pineapple and a banana combined! Originally from Brazil and a few other locations in South America, New Zealand is one of the largest produces of this unique fruit. Feijoa season here in New Zealand is Autumn to early winter so are usually available from mid-March until...

Calling all serious peanut butter lovers - this blog is for you!

I am a self-confessed peanut butter lover and the monkeys have followed suit (#mummysboys). This is of course not without good reason! Peanut butter is a very nutritious and versatile product. Made, by in large, from peanuts it is packed full of protein, good fats and fibre. In particular peanuts provide an important source of your...

Celebrating 3 Years and ‘Getting Lucky’
by Julie Bhosale

This time three years ago I officially launched my new business as ‘The New Mum’s Nutritionist’ which became Dr Julie Bhosale once my thesis was complete. March 24th to be precious, at midnight! I believe that calls for a celebration!
I feel that here in New Zealand we have such a ‘tall poppy’ syndrome and do not celebrate our wins or our mile stones nearly as much as we should. My personality...

Easy Slow Cooker BBQ Ribs
by Julie Bhosale
Do you have any foods or meals that are on your bucket list? By bucket list I mean that list of 'it would be nice to try and make some day when I have more time, energy and kind of know what I am doing?'. Well ribs has been one of my 'bucket list' meals. My husband loves them and the boys have always enjoyed them when we have eaten out together. As a #mumofboys I thought it high time that I had a...

5 Lunch Box Hits with Nairns Oatcakes
by Julie Bhosale

Ah the lunch box! As both our boys go to day care centres which provide lunch (cooked lunch actually!) I have thus so far avoided the daily need to make them a lunch box....while I still make a lot of snacks for them I am fast realising that a pre-prepared lunch box every single day is quite a different food challenge. Our big boy starts school in October (seriously how did that happen) and while...
