3 Food Tips to Keep You Sane (and Satisfied) This Christmas

Ah, December… the month of twinkly lights, festive music, and… chaos. Between school events, late-night deadlines, family gatherings, and all the extra treats everywhere you turn, it’s no wonder so many of us feel like we’re just surviving rather than enjoying the season.

This year, I want to help you do Christmas differently — with less stress, more nourishment, and yes, still plenty of festive joy. That’s why in the latest episode of Dr Julie’s Coffee Chats, I share three simple, no-guilt food tips to help you stay grounded, nourished, and actually enjoy the season.

Here’s a short dive into those tips — plus some ways my Christmas Goodies can make them even easier.

1️⃣ Add, Don’t Restrict

It’s tempting during the festive season to focus on what you can’t eat — “no sugar,” “no bread,” “just one biscuit”… sound familiar? The truth is, restriction often backfires. Feeling deprived makes overindulging more likely.

Instead, focus on what you can add in: more protein, colourful vegetables, fibre, and healthy fats. These simple additions help your energy stay steady, your cravings stay in check, and your mood stay balanced.

2️⃣ Plan the Plate, Not Perfection

December is messy — late nights, unexpected visitors, and last-minute school events are par for the course. Trying to eat “perfectly” every day is a setup for stress.

Instead, aim to plan your plate, not perfection. A nourishing plate might include:

  • Protein (eggs, fish, beans)

  • Colourful vegetables or fruit

  • Whole grains or fibre

  • Healthy fats

Even one balanced plate a day can make a huge difference to your energy, digestion, and mood.

The rest of the day? Enjoy the celebrations, the treats, the leftovers… without guilt.

Remember all my DJK products are here to help - personally slow cookers are a live saver regardless of if it's hot or cold!

3️⃣ Keep Joy in the Mix

Christmas is about connection, celebration, and yes — indulgence. Food isn’t just fuel; it’s tradition, comfort, and a way to connect with the people we love.

One of the biggest lessons I share on the podcast is that letting go of guilt around food comes from understanding this social aspect. When we acknowledge this very human part it gives us permission to take the pressure off and then the guilt drops.

The truth is, the food itself isn’t the “problem” — it’s often the pressure we put on ourselves to eat perfectly. Christmas meals, treats, and baking rituals are really about connection, love, and joy.

When we shift our focus from restriction to connection, we can enjoy festive foods fully — without stress or guilt. It’s about savouring the laughter, the shared moments, the smells, the tastes, and the memories we create together.
